Go back up in the attic and put in a 2x4 cross-brace between the joists, and mount the fan-rated box to it. Then you can use the screws that came with the fan to screw through to the 2x4. WebIt looks to be screwed directly into the ceiling joist - either that, or one of the floorboards upstairs, which are all cross-lain 2x6's. Well, fans do move and can vibrate a little. Gotta consider that. Fan rated boxes use 10-32 screws instead of the 8-32 screws on most round/octagon boxes. Got it.
